Flat Roofs in Basingstoke, Fleet and all Areas in Hampshire and Surrey

Flat roofs are installations with a smaller slope, usually less than 10°, and have a horizontal appearance. Whereas pitched roofing is a common installation choice for most residential buildings in local areas such as Basingstoke and Fleet, home extensions and commercial properties across Hampshire and Surrey will have flat roofs fitted.

Flat roofs are also common on car ports and outbuildings.

In the past, flat roofing was installed using felt, and hot bitumen, as an application system. For roofing contractors, working with hot materials often proved hazardous. The same materials also presented a significant risk to those living in, or passing, the property.

The roofing sector has adapted to these risks, and now uses a choice of cold application systems to include EMPD rubber, GRP fibreglass and liquid rubber roofing, all of which are much safer to install.

Even felt has undergone a transformation and today’s systems are now applied by heating an integrated bitumen layer with a blow torch.

Pitched roofing has an expected lifespan of 40 to 60 years, but flat roofs typically last for 20 to 30 years. Modern EPDM and GRP systems can extend life expectancy if properly maintained. The team at MFM Home Improvements installs all materials to an exact specification.

Torch-On Felt

This is a durable, multilayer system designed for flat roofs, and it uses bitumen-backed sheets which are melted onto an OSB deck with a blowtorch. Most often installed as a three-layer system, a torch-on felt has an expected lifespan of between 15 and 25 years in total.

This is one of the most affordable choices for flat roofing work.

EPDM Rubber

A synthetic ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) system has high-end temperature resistance and stands up well to ultraviolet light and weathering. It is a single-ply membrane designed for flat roofs and, with the correct maintenance, can last in place for 50 years.

EPDM also has automotive, HVAC and industrial applications.

GRP Fibreglass

Fitted as a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) product, this is a system applied to buildings in Basingstoke, Fleet and the surrounding areas using woven fibreglass mats and resin. It has a 30-year lifespan and creates a durable and seamless surface for waterproofing flat roofs.

Topcoats can be applied for added protection and aesthetic purposes.

Liquid Rubber

This is another cold-application system for flat roofing and uses an acrylic or polyurethane membrane that is painted or sprayed onto the deck to form a watertight barrier. It has exceptional UV resistance and, when installed by professionals, lasts for as many as 25 years.

It is most often used for repair and resurfacing work.
